Farm Fresh Connection (FFC) was created to diversify markets accessible to Maine Farmers; to focus
on building a local food system; to provide access to food grown by our neighbors; and to feed Maine
citizens fresh, nutritious, healthy food. Farm Fresh Connection builds relationships among Maine
farmers, students, food buyers in health and educational institutions and local communities, thereby
sustaining Maine farms, boosting local economies and nurturing community.A program of the Maine Sustainable Agriculture Society (MESAS), with support from Common Good
Ventures, FFC was established in October of 2002. It is currently working with Bates and Bowdoin
Colleges, Central Maine Medical Center and St. Mary's Hospital to develop Buying Plans/Buying
Projections to determine the crop volumes needed per week, then helping FFC Members/Maine Farmers
with planting plans to supply the food. Maine Farmers can become FFC Members for $25/year. A weekly
availability list goes to food buyers in institutions and to a handful of restaurants in addition to
fulfilling advance orders based on 2003 institutional buying projections.
Farm Fresh Connection's customer institutions want to adapt their menus to accommodate seasonal
produce. The buyers have to "feed a family of 3000," requiring plans for nutrition, taste, variety,
texture, efficiency, budgets and enjoyment. Farm Fresh Connection works with the institutions'
operations staff to integrate locally grown foods into their menus. For more information about Farm
Fresh Connection, please contact Martha Putnam at 207-761-0345 or martha@farmfreshconnection.org
